This Song Was Number One 50 Years Ago. Do You Remember It?

Certain songs just stay with you for your entire life. They bring you back to an emotional place, and you recall upon these songs to recreate that emotion. For me, “Hey Jude” is one of those songs. I play it whenever I need to — you know — “make it better.”

There are some songs, however, that seemed to be really important to me when they were out, but I have forgotten about them. That’s why I sometimes like to check the Billboard Top 100 charts from the past. I like that feeling of going, “Oh, yeah! I used to love that song!”

For example, do you know what the number one song was 50 years ago on this day?

“You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling” by The Righteous Brothers!

The song was written by Barry Mann, Phil Spector, and Cynthia Weil and produced by Phil Spector. It was the number five song of the year, and made another return to the Billboard Charts in 1986 when it was featured in the film Top Gun. It has also been covered by Cilla Black, Dionne Warwick, and Hall & Oates.

The song still stands the test of time. Recording artists Tom Jones and Jessie J even sung it at this year’s Grammy Awards!

The video below features The Righteous Brothers, Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield, singing in 1965. The audio shows off their clear vocals, but the video is a little blurry, so I’ve also included their performance of the song at their 2003 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame right below.

Please SHARE if you remember this song!
