Man Asks Shelter To See Old Dog To Adopt, Dog’s Reaction Couldn’t Be Sweeter

A man’s request to adopt a senior dog at an animal shelter is earning accolades from dog lovers across the globe. Pennsylvania SPCA Danville Center shared the now-viral pictures of Wayne Mull meeting Jack, a senior Dachshund mix who arrived at the shelter a few weeks earlier after his owner passed away.

Pennsylvania SPCA Danville Center posted the pictures on Facebook and wrote:

“Yesterday, this gentleman wandered in the shelter and asked to see an old dog in need of a home. We paired him with Jack; a 13 year old dachshund mix who has dental disease, a heart murmur, and typical old man lumps/bumps. He said, “He’s perfect, I’ll take him. What vet do you recommend I take him too?”

“Jack curled up on his lap and caught a nap while they both patiently waited for the paperwork to be processed. This is what animal welfare is all about. Falling in love, giving second chances to those who need it most, and finding the heroes in humanity. Happy tails Jack! We couldn’t be happier for you!”

Mull told WNEP-TV that Jack has bonded with him already, following him everywhere and enjoying their car rides together. Mull said his goal was to adopt a senior dog: “I think it’s good to give them a chance. Otherwise, they don’t have much of a life to look forward to.”

Mull’s kind gesture has come to the attention of a Dachshund rescue group in Indiana, who has offered to help pay Jack’s medical bills.

The PSPCA staff couldn’t be happier with the outcome. “It was just a match made in heaven. Jack immediately took to him. He soaked in all the attention and sat on his lap. It was perfect,” Kristen Szwast, the site manager at the PSPCA, told the news station. “They have so much life to give, and it’s a shame that they get overlooked in the shelter just because of their age.”

Many people who saw the shelter’s post agreed and thanked Mull for his choice.

“This tears me up,” one commenter wrote on Facebook. “I love seeing older dogs get happy homes. They deserve love just as much as the puppies.”

“How sweet! Thank you sir for rescuing and making his last year’s his best,” said another.

“What a wonderful gift you have given Jack,” wrote another fan. “You are one of the good people in our world….may he bring you joy and love.”

A quarter of the PSPCA’s homeless dogs are elderly. The shelter is encouraging potential adopters to consider taking a senior dog home. And as Jack so adorably demonstrates – senior dogs have a lot of love to give.
