An orphaned sea otter pup washed up on the beach in Monterey, California. She was starving, scared, and hungry. Crying alone on the beach, marine biologist Karl Meyer and his team rescued the baby they named “Otter 501.” Without a mom to teach her to to brave the wild, there was no way that she could survive. They carefully placed the baby in a tank where experienced surrogate mother Tula was waiting. The staff hoped Tula would adopt 501, and that the baby would accept Tula as her new mom.
Can an orphan sea otter pup be accepted by a surrogate mother to learn how to survive and thrive back in the wild?
At first, the baby is confused by the “strange creature” who shares the tank. She even looks terrified. But when you see what happens in this video at around the 2:30 mark, you are going to melt, I promise.
A mother’s love, whether for her own child or someone else’s, is truly magical. What an incredible moment caught on camera!
