Sawyer Fredericks proved himself to be an early front-runner in this year’s season of The Voice when he sang ‘I Am a Man of Constant Sorrow’ for his blind audition. The 15-year-old farm boy from Fultonville, NY begins his audition subtly, with nothing more than a few words crooned in a bluesy style reminiscent of another time. Before the instrumentals even have a chance to ring in alongside his voice, three judges turn their chairs, sold by nothing more than a soulful first phrase of a classic American song. As Fredericks starts strumming his guitar to pick up the pace of his performance, he layers some controlled rasp through his vocals that has the judges doling out nothing but praise.
It’s quite remarkable that a 15-year-old has developed such a strong knack for singing in a soulful and bluesy style, though some might argue that Fredericks lacks the emotional maturity to really deliver the powerful punch of a seasoned blues singer. Even if he lacks that intense emotional depth, it’s undeniable that he’s got raw talent that will only get better with time and practice.
