David Spisak Jr. is no stranger to hardship. The 8-year-old from Chesapeake, Va., was diagnosed with leukemia when he was just 2 years old and has been battling it ever since, according to ABC News. Despite the physical toll the illness has taken on David’s life, he was able to make a connection with someone who has completely changed his life.

David struck a bond with 7-year-old Ayla, a fellow classmate at school, as described by ABC News. After David’s parents made the decision to let him live the rest of his life in the fullness of joy, no longer isolated away from people and places, Ayla became much more than just a classmate. In the footage below, the two are seen being affectionate with one another, claiming that they are in love.

David and Ayla went on a date to a local bowling alley, which is where David’s parents realized that he and Ayla shared something special.
